One of the main reasons i started Xbase was because i had a great experience of getting high quaity crypto insights from X back in 2020. Twitter was a place where smart people hang out and comment on stuff. You could see conversations between smart people in any field on any topic for free.

Twitter is a goldmine of insights.

We went to Twitter to see what smart people said about crypto, but we quickly learned finding good tweets was hard.

The Twitter search results were spammed with posts generated by bots. It had no way to filter the specific topics from people. Since Twitter started as a news platform,  its design prioritizes the newest info so old tweets rarely get resurfaced. We found some good tweets and used Notion to organize them, but Notion UX was slow and the search was limited.

what makes the current X feed shitty?

there are about three reasons

1. lack of topic filters
1. even if you follow high quality accounts, they will occasionally tweet about stuff that do not interest you or even distract you from your purpose of using X.

2. popularity contest
1. a lot of the tweets in your For You are often the tweets that are liked a lot recently. And large number of likes doesn’t mean it’s useful. In fact, a lot of times, short witty tweets get lots of likes but they don’t add any value.

Overall, the X or any social feed is designed you to get addicted to whatever that’s addicting. Even if you use Lists, there is not enough topic filters. No matter how hard you try to curate your feed by disliking some tweets or click on less like this, the feed rarely reflects your feedback.

It’s time for a new way of getting social feed.

why focus on investor?

1. since we don’t have access to all the data on X nor the resources to process them, we should target niche custoemers.

2. The highest value niche customers are investors. They are willing to pay for extra alpha. Perfect target customers for consumer SaaS like us.

3. A lot of investors and traders already live on X chasing the latest conversation about tech and crypto and stocks.

what would be the 5-star experience of such feed?

1. must pick a subset of investment topics and index all the tweets from the top accounts from that industry. e.g. we are doubling down on crypto initially.

2. get feedback on curated tweets. Track which ones a user likes and dislikes

3. use LLM to add context that explains why the tweet might be beneficial for the user

4. basically combine the traditional algorithmic feed and use LLM to review the feed before showing to the user and re-curating

5. must have a mobile app as most will be reading on their phones. RN is the only cross platform solution that guarantees native-like performance so use RN.

6. must have a great recommendation system. people don’t like prompting or active research
1. we should try to mimic Youtube + prompting or topic-based curation
